How does one summarize 30 years of Dr. Bizer's career in a page or two for a web site? Perhaps it would be best if we limit this discussion to only six of his attributes: Dr. Bizer, the friend, the listener, the ophthalmologist, the eye surgeon, the teacher, and the leader.

Friend and Listener

Dr. Bizer likes to say that he "specializes" in listening to his patients, something that many doctors today seem to have too little time to do. He treats each of his patients as if they were his close personal friends.

Ophthalmologist

Dr. Bizer is what the American Academy of Ophthalmology calls a "comprehensive ophthalmologist". He provides his patients a wide scope of services such as routine eye examinations and diabetes evaluations, glaucoma control and emergency eye care, and macular disease and headache evaluations. He readily refers his patients to sub-specialist ophthalmologists, when appropriate.

Eye Surgeon

As an eye surgeon, Dr. Bizer was the first eye surgeon in South Florida to implant intra-ocular lenses during cataract surgery that could be folded and placed in the eye without need for larger incisions. He is a leader in cataract surgery without stitches and is one of the few ophthalmologists in our community conducting cataract surgery with topical eye drop anesthesia, meaning there is no need for shots.

Dr. Bizer is a leader in refractive surgery and has performed LASIK, LASEK, PRK, PTK, RK, and AK (see this web site) for many years and was the first private practice Ophthalmologist to perform the new CK (Conductive Keratoplasty) for far-sightedness in Florida. You may learn more about these procedures elsewhere on this web site.

Teacher

Dr. Bizer is the only full Professor of Ophthalmology at Nova-Southeastern University, where he is chairman of the Ophthalmology Department. Dr. Bizer has taught ophthalmology to the medical students at NSU since 1984, the year the medical school was established.

Additionally, Dr. Bizer is one of only 50 eye surgeons in the United States who is credentialed to teach and certify other ophthalmologists in the operation of the VISX Excimer Laser for refractive and photo-therapeutic eye surgery. He has taught classes in this technology from California to Florida and has trained more than 200 ophthalmologists and residents, and fellows in training in this new surgical art.

Leader

Dr. Bizer was the second osteopathic ophthalmologist in the country to represent the members of the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology to the Council of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (The National Organization of MD Ophthalmologists). He served two 3-year terms as councilor and was elected by the Sub-Specialty and Special Interest Section as Deputy Section Leader two years in a row. He continues to serve the AAO as a media spokesperson and is often called upon by members of the print and TV media for his opinions on timely topics on behalf of the AAO.

Dr. Bizer is a past chairman of the department of surgery and past chief of staff of his hospital. He served as President of the Broward County Osteopathic Medical Association, and distinguished himself as National President of the American Osteopathic College of Ophthalmology, from which he has received many prestigious awards. He continues to represent the AOCO as their representative to the American Osteopathic Association's Council on Federal Health Programs in Washington, DC.

Listening, isn't that where it all begins?
