Dr. Burgess specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of retinal diseases including the management of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears and detachments, macular holes, uveitis, ocular tumors and ocular trauma. He performs surgery including laser treatments for a variety of retinal conditions. He was also one of the first retinal specialists to offer Photodynamic Therapy, the latest treatment for macular degeneration.
Dr. Burgess moved to Florida with his family in 1971 and was raised locally in Palm Beach County. He received his undergraduate degree in 1987 from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. While still in undergraduate school he conducted and published research at Louisiana State University Eye Center. He attended medical school at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital earning his M.D. degree in 1991. Dr. Burgess completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Cornell University's North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York and was chief resident of Ophthalmology in 1995. After residency Dr. Burgess went on to complete a two-year sub-specialty fellowship in medical and surgical treatment of retinal and vitreous diseases at the University of California, San Diego, Shiley Eye Institute. During the fellowship he was involved in cutting-edge research studying diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and macular holes. Dr. Burgess' work is published in several peer-reviewed journals and he has been a presenter at national ophthalmic meetings. He prides himself on keeping abreast of all the latest advances in his field. Following completion of his training, Dr. Burgess returned to Florida where his wife, Zuzana Hrdlicka Burgess, M.D. and their two dogs join him. He joined Fort Lauderdale Eye Institute as the group's Retina sub-specialist in 1999.
Dr. Burgess is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and American College of Surgeons. He is also a member of the Vitreous Society of Retinal Specialists, and the Broward County Ophthalmology Society.
