Stuart K. Burgess, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Burgess grew up in Palm Beach County. While an undergraduate at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. he conducted and published research at Louisiana State University Eye Center. He attended medical school at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital earning his M.D. degree in 1991. Dr. Burgess completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Cornell University's North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York and was chief resident of Ophthalmology in 1995. He was one of the first retinal specialists to offer the advanced treatments for macular degeneration, including anti-VEG F agents, Lucentis® and Avastin. Dr. Burgess is fellowship trained.
After residency Dr. Burgess went on to complete a two-year sub-specialty fellowship in medical and surgical treatment of retinal and vitreous diseases at the University of California, San Diego, Shiley Eye Institute. During the fellowship he was involved in cutting-edge research studying diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and macular holes.
Dr. Burgess joined the Fort Lauderale Eye Institute in 1999 as the group’s retinal subspecialist. He the formed our affiliate the Fort Lauderdale Retinal Institute in 2005. He is a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists and the Broward County Ophthalmology Society. His work is published in several peer review journals and he has been a presenter at national ophthalmic meetings.
