Ask the Ophthalmologist – Can 15 years of contact lenses harm eyes?

Contact lenses

September 23, 2009 · 0 comments

Question: If I wear contact lenses for more than 15 years, can I harm my eyes?

The longer you wear soft contact lenses, the greater the risk. Make no mistake, contact lenses wrongly worn are extremely dangerous to you eyes.

As you age, your tears diminish, increasing risk. Also, the surfaces of your eyes become altered in ways which we do not fully understand but are related to chronic foreign body reaction.

Most importantly, remember the following:

  • NEVER wear your contacts overnight
  • ALWAYS change your case once or twice a month
  • The safest contact lenses are the daily throw away type
